The Ultra-Paddle Warm Up for the 60th Berg kicks o

The Ultra-Paddle Warm Up for the 60th Berg kicks off in May!!

With the 60th Anniversary of the Berg River Canoe Marathon starting on the 7th of July, it's time to get training and rake in some miles before the iconic event.

Similar to the virtual event that happened last year, in place of the 2020 Berg, we are opening up an Ultra-Paddle for the month of May to best prepare you for the 60th Berg in early July

Many of the expected and rules apply to this virtual event, similar to what was seen in last years Ultra-Paddle, but there are a couple of unique features to this event...

1. The person who racks up the most kms in the month of May (and can show us they have done that distance) will be winning a free entry to the 60th Berg - because that kind of grit and stamina is what the Berg is all about and we would love to have that warrior on board for the event!!

2. Race the Records Challenge - we will be posting a list of all the relevant records that have been achieved on the Berg over the years (which can be seen on the Berg site now) and we would like to see if anyone could give the records a run for their money, or see how close you can get to the records of these Berg legends!

There are two different versions of the race that you can take part in: the "Warm-up for the 60th Berg" (240kms completed over the month of May) or the "Ready for the 60th Berg" (240kms completed in FOUR DAYS within the month of May).

The entry fee is going to be R150 or $/€/£10 and proceeds will be going to Paarl Canoe Club development programme, helping to pay the club membership fees of the development paddlers - more info to follow!

Entries open from the 25th of April and the Ultra-Paddle starts worldwide on the 1st of May. We encourage all to take part to prep for the 60th and to post and track your progress on social media so we can all see how everyone is doing around the world.

Dusi success inspires Berg organisers for 60th anniversary edition

The organisers of the Berg River Canoe Marathon from 7 to 10 July this year have heaped praise on the recent MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon that was successfully staged against a strict set of Covid-19 lockdown protocols, paving the way for the eagerly anticipated 60th anniversary of the four-day race from Paarl to Velddrif.

“We watched the roll-out of the MyLife Dusi with great interest and we were thrilled to see them pull off a very successful Dusi with adherence to all of the rules and regulations,” said Berg organiser Brandon Macleod.

“The collaboration between Canoeing South Africa, the local union and the organisers proved that it is possible to stage a major paddling event that is fully compliant with every tier of regulations in place at that time and to assure the safety and well-being of every participant and their support crew.

“It was an exceptional achievement and we take great encouragement as we put our heads down to organise what is going to be a big milestone edition of the Berg marathon,” he added.

The MyLife Dusi negotiated a sweeping set of protocols in collaboration with Canoeing South Africa and their local authorities that included strict requirements for participants and their technical support to wear masks, be regularly screened and to sanitise their hands, to arrive just before their batch starts and leave as soon after each stage was completed.

“A lot of those protocols will be easily adapted to the Berg where smaller, staggered batches and the long-distance nature of the race means that sufficient safe proximity between paddlers is a given,” he added.

“We accept that spectators will not be allowed under the current Covid regulations and that the designated technical support person allocated to each paddler will only have limited, controlled access to the start and finish and a number of points on the river each day.

“We saw at the Dusi that even paddlers that have done the race dozens of times were capable of adapting to these changes, ensuring that they had a safe and pleasant race,” he added.

Entries for the 60th Berg River Canoe Marathon in 2021 are OPEN!! (with a Twist)

As of today, you can enter for the 60th Anniversary of the Berg, with a little added bonus for getting your entry in early!!

Get your entry in now and you will be able to pay off your entry in regular monthly installments, or amounts building up to the race from 7-10 July 2021.

If you took part in the Ultra-Paddle earlier in 2020, you receive a discount on your race entry for the 60th Berg. The Ultra-Paddlers have already been sent their newsletter about their special entry, and the chatter around the 60th has already started rumbling!

Commit yourself to doing the Berg and taking part in the iconic 60th anniversary of the event!!

Entries will be limited and we are expecting large numbers due to the milestone year - it will be one for the books.

Tallying some of the numbers, looking back at the Ultra-Paddle in the month of July, and it is incredible to say that the new concept of the Ultra-Paddle reached people in 21 different countries around the world (that we know of).

An enormous thank you for the overwhelming global support. Ultra-Paddling has taken the world by storm!
