You can feel the Berg River Marathon approaching: The winter chill is setting in, the rain has been falling, the rivers are rising, the farms bordering the river are looking lush and green, and the paddlers are out in the ever-shortening days to get some mileage in their arms before Paarl to Velddrif on July 2-5.
This long weekend the flat-water racers head to Upington in the North West province to fight for national titles and places in the SA team for World Champs later this year, while the Berg River paddlers have a chance to get some tripping done on the river.
The recent rains have improved the river conditions dramatically, but entrants for the July 2-5 journey from Paarl to the sea are still mostly hoping for some more rain to ensure a fun four days (see notice below).
Meanwhile the entry list for this year’s Berg is looking impressive, with loads of former winners and record-breaking finishers, as well a dramatic increase in the number of women and novices compared to 2024.
For those who are still sitting on the fence about whether to be part of the Ultimate Canoe Race or not, remember the date for guaranteed T-Shirts is this week and it will be unlucky for you if you miss the Friday the 13th deadline. |
