Entries opened for the 2025 Berg River Marathon last week and the big discounts for those paddlers with quick fingers has seen a steady stream of entries over the opening weekend, with the early entrants enjoying some healthy savings.
The lure of the #TheUltimateCanoeRace is clearly strong with early indications pointing to a revival of what is surely one of the best tests of pure canoeing on the South African calendar.
Anybody who has completed the four-day event from Paarl to Velddrif will tell you it is one of those unique events that tests your body and mind, but feeds the soul. It is a race for the canoeing purist, that tests skills, fitness and willpower.
However, the first deadline is now looming and at midnight tonight the 33% discount on senior entries, and massive 52% discount for juniors, will be changed to more realistic entry fees for the four-day classic.
The normal entry fees for seniors and juniors for 2025 has been set at R3 300 and R2 100 respectively, but until midnight today (Monday, February 10) the entry fees will be R2 200 and R1 000 respectively.
There are also a few other extra incentives for entrants with a brand new kevlar Salt K1 due to be given away via lucky draw at the Berg River Marathon prizegiving. There are however a few conditions to getting into that lucky draw – you get an entry for every four days of racing in the Berg Series events.
This is not as tough as it sounds, and anybody who finishing the Berg will obviously have completed four days of racing, so all official finishers will be included in the draw.
For a few lucky souls, there may also be an extra, second lucky draw entry. The Berg Series is made up of six races, culminating in the four-day Berg River Marathon. On Feb 1, the West Coast Challenge saw a big field start the series at Velddrif. The next four events are the Berg prep races: Paarl to Skooltjie (May 17), Wellington to Hermon (May 31), Hermon to Gouda (June 7), Gouda to Bridgetown (June 21).
So that means four more racing days before the start of the Berg ... and four pre-Berg finishes. Add in four days completed at the Berg itself, and you will have eight or nine days of racing and two chances to win a new K1.
