Is it expensive to take part in the Berg? That depends on you and how much luxury you want, but it does not have to be expensive to take part in the country’s “Ultimate Canoe Race”.
The following is plan, prepared by a veteran of the Berg who has loads of experience in taking part in one of South Africa’s iconic sporting events without breaking the bank.
The Berg on a shoestring budget
(excluding your equipment)
Entry fee: Early bird = R2500
Day 1 accommodation Zonkwasdrif – free camping, or R100 at the Riebeekkasteel hostel.
Day 2 accommodation Bridgetown – Bungalows at R150pp or camping cost per site.
Day 3 accommodation Soutkloof – free sleeping in a barn.
Transport – plus minus R1500 fuel, (From Cape Town) depending on type of vehicle
Energy supplements – Game R120 per 500g tin
Catering – Lunch included in entry fee, dinner and breakfast at own cost. +/- R900
TOTAL COST – about R5270.00
If traveling alone it would cost you about R5000 to take part in the Berg. Sharing costs would be less.
