Honouring one of our Super Seconders – the Dot van Riet Award

The Dot van Riet Award celebrates the spirit of those who keep the paddlers going. It’s named after Augusta Dorothea “Dot” van Riet—whose tireless support as a seconder in the very first 1962 Berg River Canoe Marathon helped sustain the pioneers on that first four-day adventure.

Each year we now extend this tribute to past van Riet seconds, including Samantha van Riet, who sadly passed away in 2023. She stood by her father Willem and her brothers Louw and Willem Jr on countless Bergs. Her dedication embodies her grandmother’s legacy of encouragement and resilience
